John J. Tortora D.D.S.

Mercury Free Dentist Dr TortoraDr. Tortora was born and raised in Staten Island, New York, and attended Wagner College, receiving his B.S. in Biology. From there, he entered the prestigious New York University College of Dentistry completing the entire curriculum in three years. He received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 1975, graduating in the top quarter of his class. He went on to St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson, Long Island as a General Practice Resident. At the hospital he treated many handicapped children and had the opportunity to work with newborn, cleft-palate babies. In addition, there was his work on the indigent and incarcerated population of Suffolk County as part of their dental public health program. Upon leaving residency, Dr. Tortora joined the practice of Dr. Neil Roth. With his direct mentorship, experience was gained in all phases of general dentistry with an emphasis on preventive quality care.

Through continuing education and intense personal study of the biocompatibility of dental materials, Dr. Tortora ceased the use of mercury-silver amalgam in 1984. He began to attract a large following of patients from the holistic communities, both in New York and New Jersey. Also, Dr. Tortora’s knowledge and experience of nutrition, homeopathy, acupuncture, and other holistic modalities, has helped him effectively treat and advise holistically oriented patients. He has treated patients of holistic gurus such as Gary Null, Robert Atkins, M.D., and many others. Countless patients have been helped to their personal health goals by Dr. Tortora’s knowledge of amalgam removal protocol and use of healthy dental materials. Also he provides a very comprehensive periodontal treatment program. Through extensive study and training he offers both non-surgical and surgical treatments and maintenance and monitoring programs.

For Dr. Tortora the joy of dental practice is transforming a mouth to healthy function and getting to know the patient as a person, developing a working relationship. In this manner, he is able to use a true holistic approach to treatment. Dr. Tortora lives in Fair Haven, New Jersey with his wife Bonnie. He has two grown sons, Brandon, and Jeremy. His hobbies include photography, and singing in the church choir.
